Background

The thyroid gland, located in the neck, is an important regulator which secretes hormones that act on virtually all body cells. The functions influences by these hormones include oxygen consumption, growth, temperature sensitivity, gastrointestinal, muscle and nervous system activity, cardiovascular function, reproduction, formation of blood cells, vitamin requirements and metabolism of protein, fat, and carbohydrates.

The major hormone secreted by the gland is thyroxine, which is a derivative of the amino acid tyrosine. This hormone also contains iodine, which must be supplied by the diet for proper synthesis. Thyroid function can become severely impaired during iodine deficiency resulting in the classic deficiency disease, goiter. It is therefore essential that proper amounts of iodine be consumed daily

Recent research has also shown that iodine is very important to the health of breast tissue, and deficiency or increased requirements of this nutrient may play a role in the development for fibrocystic breast disease.

Io-Plex-A-Dine has an excellent flavor and is ideal for use by those on a low-salt diet where iodine supplementation is required.
