Background

Understanding Normal Muscle Activity

Normal muscle contraction occurs as electrical signals are sent from the brain through the spinal cord along nerve cells (called motor neurons). At the muscle site, motor neurons release chemicals that stimulate the release of calcium ions from within the muscle cell. These calcium ions interact with proteins in the muscle cell, causing the specific proteins called actin and myosin to glide past on another. This gliding motion pulls their fixed ends closer, shortening the muscle and resulting in muscle contraction. Recapture of calcium and unlinking of actin and myosin allow the muscle to return to a relaxed stage. Hypertonicity refers to the muscle being in a stage of contraction, while hypotonicity refers to an overly relaxed muscle without much form. When muscles are in this hypertonic state, palpation and physical adjustments are typically not possible and if they are it is extremely difficult to perform and painful¹.
