Glucosamine and chondroitin are the primary building blocks of gycosaminoglycans, which are the building blocks for larger proteoglycans. This formula at 3 capsules per day provides glucosamine (shellfish extract) at 1500 mg and chondroitin (beef cartilage extract) at 1200 mg consistent with the levels used in the three-year double blind, placebo controlled Glucosamine Arthritis Intervention Trial (G. A. I. T.). Available in 90ct or 180ct Sizes.
Because joints are involved in movement, most often in a “weight bearing” situation, extremely powerful cushioning and strength are required to handle the pressure placed on bones at the joints. This is accomplished with articular cartilage, special tissue which covers the ends of bones at the site of a joint or, in the case of the spine, the presence of intervertebral discs between the bones of the spine. These and other connective tissue structures, including tendons and ligaments, owe their flexibility, resilience and powerful shock absorbing abilities to cartilage.
Cartilage is a combination of water (to provide lubrication), glycosaminoglycans (complex biomolecular agg- regates which attract and hold water), the tough flexible protein collagen, plus other proteins and cellular material. These substances combine to give cartilage its incredible shock absorbing and cushioning qualities. Even in this era of advanced material science, the amazing properties of cartilage cannot be synthetically duplicated.
Chondroitin sulfate is a type of glycosaminoglycan (GAG), a critical component of even larger structures called proteoglycans, major constituents of connective tissues. GAGs consist of long heteropolysaccharide chains (derived from the smaller glucosamine building blocks) and associated proteins. They have the unique ability to hold large amounts of water within their structure and are thus able to create a viscous gel-like matrix. This matrix, also known as the ground substance, helps support and stabilize cellular and fibrous components of connective and other tissues, while at the same time helping maintain water and salt balance. GAGs are essential to the proper structure and function of many tissues, especially the connective tissues of joints, skin, eyes, and cardiovascular system. GAGs are also responsible for the amazing resilience, strength and cushioning properties of cartilage. Chondroitin is the most abundant GAG in the body and is especially important to cartilage, tendons, ligaments and aorta.
Over and above its role in helping promote healthy joints and connective tissue, chondroitin sulfate supports proper healing and cardiovascular health. This is most likely due to its fundamental role in connective tissue health which, in addition to joints, is a key component of skin and blood vessels.
Glycosaminoglycans are the molecules responsible for most of the amazing properties of cartilage; glucosamine sulfate is the primary building block of glycosaminoglycans. With age, cartilage can begin to deteriorate as its metabolism, maintenance and regeneration processes decrease. This can be even more pronounced in patients with prior joint injuries, excess weight or those consuming a poor diet. Recent scientific studies have confirmed that supplementing the diet with glucosamine sulfate can help maintain and promote the health of joints and other connective tissues.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found that manufacturing problems have been associated with dietary supplements. Products been recalled because of microbiological, pesticide, and heavy metal contamination, and because they do not contain the dietary ingredients they are represented to contain, or they contain more or less than the amount of dietary ingredient claimed on the label.
